Coronary heart disease and stroke, the primary types of cardiovascular disease caused by smoking, are the first and third leading causes of death in the United States. Approximately 61 million Americans suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure and other conditions. • More than 2,600 Americans die every day because of cardiovascular diseases, about one death every 33 seconds. • Cigarettes contain 43 known cancer-causing compounds and 400 other known toxins.

This is why people who consume large amounts of animal and dairy products suffer from an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease. Unsaturated efas, like those found in seed oils and fish, prevent saturated fats from aggregating by keeping them dispersed. This may explain why Eskimos who consumed traditional diets had a very low incidence of heart disease. The fat of land animals does not contain omega-3 efas, whereas the fat of sea mammals and fish does. Trans Fats Trans fats are a major contributing risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease.

Unraveling the lies about the antioxidant study on vitamins E and C

As JoAnn Manson, MD, chief of Preventive Medicine at BWH and principal investigator of WACS said (with my translation in brackets), "This research underscores the importance of focusing on proven methods for preventing cardiovascular disease, including physical activity, healthy diet, controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol [i.e. using pharmaceuticals], maintaining healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco." In other words, she's saying: Antioxidants are "unproven." Cardiovascular disease can only be prevented, in part, by using pharmaceuticals.
C, E or beta-carotene on cardiovascular events for women at a high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD)." Other medical associations and pharmaceutical-affiliated groups are making similar pronouncements. Vitamins C and E, according to them, are nutritionally worthless. And they're basing that conclusion on a study that actually showed the vitamins to be far better at preventing cardiovascular disease than any prescription drug!

Fifty-eight percent of all deaths are directly or indirectly related to cardiovascular disease, as 2,500 people die of heart disease each day or one every thirty-five seconds. Health care related to heart disease costs Americans 403 billion dollars a year with one in every three persons having some form of cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association's 2006 statistics. Two-thirds of all men and women who die suddenly of a heart attack had no previous symptoms, and 65 million people have high blood pressure that is due to unknown causes in 95 percent of cases.

High LDL levels are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Triglycerides: These are a type of fat made by the liver largely from sugar that can be deposited in the fatty tissues of the body. High triglyceride levels are a risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Liver, Kidney, and Muscle Function Alanine transaminase (ALT): Reflects liver function in conjunction with other tests. Albumin: It's a protein made by the liver and monitors the synthetic function of the liver.

The Women's Health Initiative research study showed a 29% increase in cardiovascular disease in the group that took Prempro? This study confirmed the earlier studies on the ineffectiveness of conventional hormone replacement therapy in preventing cardiovascular disease. In addition, WHI showed that there was no benefit for stroke prevention. Instead, women who took conventional hormones had a 41% increased risk of stroke compared to women who did not take the hormones. It is even more alarming that a 2,100%) increased risk for pulmonary embolism was observed.

In 2002 and 2003, the Women's Health Initiative demonstrated that HRT actually increased the risk of both breast cancer and cardiovascular disease and breast cancer32 and as well increased the risk of Alzheimer's Disease—though HRT had been thought to increase cognitive activity.33 "Deja vu, all over again," muttered Fran, quoting another president. For all these problems, the increased risks were termed "small." What "small" means is that HRT's use was responsible for 3,500 cardiac disease events, 2,000 breast cancers, 4,000 strokes, and 5,000 cases of pulmonary embolism per annum.
Preventive Services Task Force concluded that clinical trials have "failed to demonstrate a consistent or significant effect of any single vitamin or combination of vitamins on incident of or death from cardiovascular disease."6 At the same time, studies of vitamin A failed to show any efficacy in cancer reduction; indeed, unexpectedly, various studies seemed to show that supplements caused some increase in cancer. There were two possible problems with the HOPE study. First, it was claimed that the time span of the study, 5 years, was too short.
Following our logic in the previous chapter, we limit our discussion to the two most dangerous diseases: cardiovascular disease, particularly coronary artery disease, and cancer. For each case, we rely on the Report of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Guide to Clinical Preventive Services, published in 1989 and revised in 1996,24 and again in 2003.
It is usually stated that the two leading causes of death in the United States are cardiovascular disease and cancer. Yet we reviewed a significant article published in JAMA in 2004. Therein, the authors posed a different question: What actually causes one to die of heart disease or cancer—or any of the other leading causes of death? The leading "actual" causes of death are tobacco followed by obesity, accounting, respectively for 18% and 16% of all deaths.14 The implications of this finding—for medical practice, research, and public policy— are a book in itself.

Researchers at Osaka Medical Center for Cancer and cardiovascular disease report that removal of an extended zone of connective tissue in addition to lymph glands surrounding pancreatic tumors increased the five-year survival rate from 8 to 25%. [Gan To Kagaku Ryoho 29: 364-69, 2002] This is an astounding improvement in survival for a type of cancer that traditionally has a very high mortality rate. To learn more about hyaluronic acid and cancer, see chapter 13 in this book on Specialized nutrients (non-vitamin). Cancer: Is it inherited?
Mechanics Aging Development 123: 1655-63, 2002] One can readily recognize the potential here - one drug that would prevent or treat cancer, prevent cardiovascular disease, arthritis and inflammatory bowel disorders. The prospect of a p38 blocker, such as SCIO-469, would have enormous impact; it would be a multiple blockbuster drug. But will SCIO-469 ever get approved? The progress of these drugs has not been without failure. Vertex Pharmaceuticals announced on Sept. 24, 2001, suspension of its VX-745 oral drug that inhibits the p38 kinase inflammatory enzyme because of safety problems.
John Murray, a cardiologist, went to visit Bedouins in North Africa who ate high-fat diets but had low rates of cardiovascular disease. He brought them iron pills to determine the impact of iron on arterial disease and noticed cholesterol plaques rapidly formed among the men taking iron pills and eating high-fat diets. [Iron Time Bomb, 1999] Maybe something similar to this is happening in Saudi Arabia. The sale of alcohol is forbidden in Saudi Arabia. Alcohol increases the absorption of iron from foods and iron storage in the liver.
Current Opinion Hematology 11: 187-91,2004] Physicians have been too quick to place cancer or cardiovascular disease patients on anti-vitamin K/anti-clotting drugs and have made many patients phobic over an essential vitamin that does more than clot blood. Vitamin K is needed to prevent calcifications throughout the body and to prevent bone loss. Some physicians are changing their minds and prescribing low-dose vitamin K to their patients on blood thinners. Patients on warfarin need about 65-80 micrograms of vitamin K per day.

The simple fact of chronically high Cortisol set up by the imprint can impact memory later in life, not to mention making us more vulnerable to cardiovascular disease. When the stimulating stress hormones become overactive, as they do with chronic pain, they can affect brain cells and produce cell death, perhaps not immediately, but over time. For the brain, extreme pain experienced early in development is truly a matter of life and death. Nothing alerts us as much as pain—a pain we do not feel.

The findings suggest that soy protein supplements may offer an uncomplicated method for lowering cardiovascular disease risk (Hoie, 2005). An earlier, randomized, crossover study found that plasma and urinary isoflavone levels markedly increased with regular consumption of whole Soybean extracts in adults (23 men and 10 post-menopausal women). However, no overall differences in plasma lipids, blood pressure, or arterial compliance were identified as compared to the group consuming a control (dairy) diet.
Arguing that the study's results do not negate Garlic's potential usefulness in preventing cardiovascular disease, the editorial noted that atherosclerosis is a complex phenomenon and that not only dy-slipidemia, but inflammation, hypertension, platelet aggregation, diabetes mellitus, and numerous other lifestyle and genetic factors play important roles that Garlic might potentially influence (Charlson, 2007). Lipid-lowering effects could be found in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigating the hypocholestero-lemic action of long-acting garlic powder tablets, Allicor.

EFFECTS Crataegus is a well-studied herb for use in cardiovascular disease. Historically, it has been used for congestive heart failure, commonly in combination with cardiac glycosides as it may potentiate their effects, thereby reducing the dose of cardiac glycoside drugs. The use of Crataegus in hypertension, atherosclerosis, and hyperlipidemia is well-documented. The active principles are procyanidins and flavonoids, which cause an increase in coronary blood flow due to dilatory effects, resulting in an improvement of myocardial blood flow.

Why should we believe that while estrogen in the contraceptive pill is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, in HRT it prevents this very condition? To achieve clarify in the midst of so much confusion, a group of Dutch scientists analyzed 18 major HRT studies. They found that women on HRT were healthier than non-users, not because they were taking HRT, but because they represented a segment of society that could afford regular medical care and would be likely to have lower rates of all illnesses (British Medical Journal, May 1994).

For example, it discourages blood platelet clumping, which is associated with cardiovascular disease. This herb contains volatile, essential oils that aid digestion and relieve gas pain and distention; it promotes peristalsis. Its astringent effect helps keep hemorrhages under control. In addition, clove encourages the loosening of phlegm from the respiratory tract. It also stimulates blood flow to the skin causing localized reddening. For those who easily get cold inside the body, this herb increases internal heat, dispels internal chill and strengthens metabolism and circulation.
